Oil May Average $80 in 2010, $103 in 2011

Oil prices will average $80 a barrel next year, $103 in 2011 and rise “steadily higher” from 2012 as rebounding demand depletes OPEC’s spare capacity and non-OPEC output declines, analysts at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. said.

A return of 2002-2007 growth rates during the five years starting in 2010 would eliminate excess oil supply from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries by 2012, Bernstein said in a research report.

Oil prices reached a record $147.27 a barrel in July 2008 before plummeting to less than $40 in December as a global recession forced company closures and slowed industrial development, obliterating demand for the fuel. Crude traded at $68.48 at 9:15 a.m. in London.
